New Promo Card, Competitive Tourneys + Steve Warner at FIJ Cannes 2024

Lorcana Promo Card Tournament Festival International Des Jeux Cannes 2024

Attendees at the Festival International des Jeux, Cannes will have a chance to play the new Into the Inklands cards for the first time. There are family events, free play areas, artists signing cards, and some really good prizing for competitive events.

Players can buy tickets from 5 pm this evening for different types of events: Free Play, Family Tournaments, Sealed/Draft competitive tournaments (scroll further down the page for those tickets). A learn-to-play area will also be available.

The events will be held from Friday 23rd (release day for Into the Inklands) to Sunday 25th of this month in Cannes, France. Tournament Center are running the event and competitive play, as they have done for other events around Europe.

Note that you’ll also need tickets to the festival itself to attend the events. Booster packs, Troves, and D100 sets are in French – but the promo cards are in English.

There are lots of formats and rules at this event. We’ve explained them all further below if you are new to competitive play.

Promos and Pins

For most events, it seems like everyone will be able to get a new promo card from set 3. We assume this will be a new promo card for Into the Inklands. It is likely to be the new Scrooge McDuck – Uncle Moneybags – Event Promo that was shown recently.

The tournament prizing also mentions Promos A, B, and C from set 2 as prizing. It sounds like these are the three Rise of the Floodborn promos available at Pax Unplugged and Vienna Comic Con.

Update: The official Ravensburger Instagram confirms these three are the promos that will be given out when they mention “set 2”. This is good news, as they haven’t been at as many events as expected.

Games Designer Attending

Steve Warner – the Lead Game Designer and Co-Creator of Disney Lorcana – will be at the event. He has attended other events, being around to help players with rules, and has even played a few games with players.

Having the guy who oversaw the design of every Disney Lorcana card will definitely be helpful for any tricky interactions on day one. At least this time he (probably) won’t be able to bust out an unreleased card in a casual match.

Lorcana Card Artist Signings

Both Koni and Jochem Van Gool will be signing cards on the Ravensburger stand at 21.02. You can find them there on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 1pm-3:30pm.

It’s probably worth finding out if you need to get a ticket for the signings before, as they are often popular.

Free Play

There are various slots over the weekend for free play at €24 per person, including four Into the Inklands boosters. Players can choose to join a 4-player Draft using those packs, or use their own Constructed decks against others in more friendly games.

These areas seem more like a way to find other players and see what everyone wants to play. There are referees in the area to help you set up matches and help with rules checks. Participants can get promo items – with “a promo card, a pin, etc” mentioned.

Family Tournaments

There is a family tournament at 10 am each day at €18 per team of two: one adult and a child (under 15). Eight teams compete in four-player matches, with the first player to 20 Lore winning that match for their team.

The format is Constructed, best of 1 game, using only cards from The First Chapter and Rise of the Floodborn. There are three rounds (Swiss format) leading to a Top 2. The prizing for these events is pretty decent, including promos, packs, and pins for everyone at a minimum.

Family Tournament Prizes:

  • Winners: 1 Disney Lorcana: Disney 100 Collector’s Edition
  • Two Runners Up: 1 Into the Inklands Illumineer’s Trove
  • 1 – 8: 4 Into the Inklands booster packs, 2 Rise of the Floodborn promo cards
  • 1 – 14: 2 Into the Inklands deck boxes, 2 Into the Inklands sleeve packs
  • All: 3 Into the Inklands booster packs, 2 Into the Inklands promo cards, 2 Mickey pins

Competitive Tournaments

There will be three competitive tournaments, featuring Draft or Sealed. The first one on Friday runs over two days – the others are single days. Each is €36, regardless of format or days.

Friday 23rd, 10 am – 2 Days – Sealed Bo3 – 128 players – Continuous Construction

Starting on Friday at 10 in Swiss format using best-of-three games, predicted to end at around 7 pm. At that point, there should be a top 16 who will be invited back to the next day. Finals are four pods, with each pod winner going into the final four.

According to the official tournament rules, at 128 players this would be seven rounds on day one. This is a “continuous construction” event. This seems to mean that players can make changes to their deck in between games, using the cards from their original Sealed packs.

Prizing

  • Winner: Into the Inklands display (booster box?) and an additional set of 4 promo cards
  • Two Finalists: 1 Disney Lorcana: Disney 100 Collector’s Edition
  • 1 – 4: Into the Inklands Illumineer’s Trove
  • 1 – 8: Rise of the Floodborn Promo Card C
  • 1 – 16: Promo Playmat, Rise of the Floodborn Promo Card B
  • 1 – 32: Rise of the Floodborn Promo Card A
  • 1 – 64: 3 Into the Inklands booster packs
  • All: 6 Into the Inklands booster packs, Into the Inklands promo card, and pins

Saturday 24th, 10 am – 1 Day – Sealed Bo1 – 64 players – Continuous Construction

Starting on Saturday at 10 in Swiss format using best-of-one games. After six Swiss rounds, the top eight go into a best-of-three direct elimination. The whole event should finish at around 7 pm.

According to the official tournament rules, at 128 players this would be seven rounds on day one. This is a “continuous construction” event. This seems to mean that players can make changes to their deck in between games, using the cards from their original Sealed packs.

Prizing

  • Winner: 1 Disney Lorcana: Disney 100 Collector’s Edition
  • Two Finalists: Into the Inklands Illumineer’s Trove
  • 1 – 4: Promo Playmat, Rise of the Floodborn Promo Card C
  • 1 – 8: 3 Into the Inklands booster packs, Rise of the Floodborn Promo Card B
  • 1 – 16: 3 Rise of the Floodborn Promo Card A
  • 1 – 32: 3 Into the Inklands booster packs
  • All: 6 Into the Inklands booster packs, Into the Inklands promo card, and pins

Sunday 25th, 10 am – 1 Day – Draft Bo1 – 64 players

Starting on Sunday at 10 in Swiss format using best-of-one games. This is described as “2x draft” in pods of eight, at six rounds. That sounds like it would be two drafts, and that might make sense as 10 booster packs are mentioned for all players.

  • All: 10 Into the Inklands booster packs, Into the Inklands promo card, and pins

Learn to Play

The free-play slots and areas are dedicated to those who know how to play. New players can talk to Ravensburger at stand 21.02 for an introduction.

There is also a Twitch tournament from 4-7 pm on Friday 23rd with some popular French content creators like Ptikoui, Girl dot Games, Marie GRD Jeux, CardsHunter, Rofellos, and Maxildan. There is then an event with content creator Ptikouik at 4 pm on Saturday.

Last Year

The Festival International des Jeux in 2023 was the first time we saw some information about The First Chapter products. Only specific industry and press invites were given, and the Mickey Mouse Brave Little Tailor Pin and Purple Maleficent Pin were handed out.

Tourney Rules

There are different formats used in Disney Lorcana, mostly meaning how you make a deck. The official tournament rules cover much of this.

Formats – Constructed / Sealed / Draft

Constructed is the standard play you’ve probably seen in stores at Lorcana League events. Players bring a deck of at least 60 cards, all of the same ink, with a max of four of each named version of a card.

This format allows you to take time to build decks at home and test them out at regular events. You can change the cards between events, but not between rounds.

In Sealed, players make a deck of at least 40 cards from at least six packs they are given on the day. You have 30 minutes to construct your deck with no four-card or ink color limits. A tough format because it relies on luck and the skill of playing what you have.

Draft is similar to Sealed, in that players make a deck of at least 40 cards with no deck limits, in 25 minutes. There is a pool of packs for a pod of eight. Players in the pod open one pack at a time, take one card each, and then pass the rest of the cards onto the next player.

This continues until all cards have been taken, and then the next packs are opened. There is some luck in pulling good cards. Creating a good deck means figuring out what cards you might get, and trying to figure out what cards others took from packs you saw.

Best Of X

Bo1 means best of one, i.e. players play one game to decide the winner. Bo3 is best of three. In practice that means the first to two wins, or the player with the most wins when time runs out. It’s a bit more complicated than that, but less random than Bo1.

In general, 50 minutes is the time limit for all matches. That goes for Bo1 and Bo3. This is sometimes scrapped for the last few matches or top cut.

Swiss Format / Elimination / Top Cut

Swiss is the name of the way rounds are played. In more traditional brackets, you get knocked out on your first loss. In Swiss, you get to play lots of games. When you win, you are matched up with players with similar win numbers.

Then there are often the top 16 or top 8, known as the Top Cut. Those are the players with the most wins, or in the case of a tie, the people who won against the better-performing players. The top cut then plays against each other, normally being eliminated on their first loss.
